My professional life is comprehensive. It includes being a professor of Spanish and Latin American Studies at San José State University and teaching at universities in North Carolina, Florida, Mississippi, and in Mexico. I have taught courses at all levels, and directed Master’s essays at San José State. I was born in Argentina but have travelled throughout the Spanish-speaking world and led summer study programs to Yucatan for teachers and students from 1992 to 2004.
In research and scholarship I focus on Cuba, U.S. Hispanic literature, and literary translation. This website shows some of my books and has a link to many of my articles and contributions to books in both English and Spanish. My publications and presentations at conferences such as the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese and the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language, state and regional foreign language associations, and Latin American Studies organizations are broad in scope and include: curriculum development, articulation, immigrant communities in South America, literary translations, translation issues, strategies for teaching poetry, advocacy, research strategies, popular culture, comparative literary studies, and, most consistently the life and writings of Cuba’s national hero, José Martí.
